Birth Announcement/Obituary Policy

As community newspapers, we understand the importance of maintaining the birth and death records for our area. To that end, our birth announcement and obituary policy is fairly flexible.

As a general rule, birth announcements and obituaries may be submitted to us for publication free of charge under the following guidelines:

• for length. (We will edit the information provided for free publication to fit as space allows.)

• for content. (No guarantees are made as to how much or what general information will be included in free items.)

• births are written in a standard news item format, with no “proud to announce” or other “flowery” language.

• will include name of baby; weight; length; birthdate; parents’ names and place of residence; names of living grandparents and great-grandparents, etc.; and names of siblings.

• free obituaries will be edited to fit a standard news style, with the “flowery” language removed or rewritten at our discretion.

• under preceded in death: free obituaries do not include the family members of previous generations — parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. nor those extended family members such as nieces and nephews, etc.

• under survivors: free obituaries do not include the names of the deceased’s children’s spouses; the names of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. (only a number of grandchildren, etc.); the names of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc.; or pets.

• memorial information is not included in free obituaries.

• reception information is not included in free obituaries.

A photo can be included (cropped at our discretion) with a free birth announcement or obituary.

Any birth announcements or obituaries that the family wishes to be published as submitted will be considered paid obituaries and be billed at the current column inch rate. Families are encouraged to ask for an estimate of charges when submitting a paid obituary, so they are aware of the charges and can make an informed decision regarding free or paid. They will not be allowed to change from a paid obituary to a free obituary once it has been published.
