Council Adopts Resolutions/Ordinances, Upcoming Election Details

On Monday, Aug. 7, Culbertson’s town council met in the town hall for their monthly meeting. The second reading of ordinance 237, which is an ordinance to amend the Cemetery plot rates, was approved by the Council. This ordinance will go into effect 30 days following the date of this meeting.
The first reading of ordinance 238, an ordinance adopting and enacting a new code, was also approved by the council. This is the municode, which has already been approved by the council previously, only now they are adopting it as a whole.
A resolution to cancel the 2017 municipal election, resolution 457, was approved. This resolution shows that it is the council’s intent to cancel, but write-in ballots are still an option if applications are sent in before the date of Tuesday, Sept. 5. If any applicants for the position of mayor are written-in before this date, then that applicant will legally be on the ballot. If there are no write-ins before Sept. 5, the decision of who will fill the empty spots will be up to the council members.
Mayor Abe Rumsey will not be applying for re-election, so the position is open to write-ins. David Solem and Mark Nelson, both members of the council, are running for their seats again in the 2017 municipal election.
Resolution 458, which sets wages for the 2017-18 fiscal year, was approved. This needed to be updated and approved for correct wording, that reads council members will be paid bi-annually. It was listed before that they would be paid every two years, which was incorrect.
The next regular council meeting is set for Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the town hall.
